1. Proper Cleaning

Jewelry should be cleaned on a regular basis to keep its shine and sparkle.

2. Have Jewelry Checked Regularly

It is necessary to check prongs, links, fasteners, and stones once a year to make sure the structure of the jewelry is properly maintained. This is especially true for jewelry containing expensive stones.

3. Maintain Precious Metals

Most fine jewelry is constructed from precious metals such as platinum, gold, or silver.

Platinum

Although platinum is a wear-resistant metal, it's a very white metal that will require professional polishing to keep it shining brightly. It's necessary to bring platinum jewelry to a professional jeweler for polishing because it involves several finishing and polishing processes to abrade this very dense metal. When platinum is polished professionally, it will revert to its original brilliance.

Yellow Gold

Polishing yellow gold is necessary for it to retain its original glow. It's not a very expensive process, and it is well worth the trouble of removing small scratches and spots that tend to tarnish over time. Once yellow gold is polished, it looks like a brand new piece of jewelry. Many of the jewelry cleaning solutions on the market are great for removing everyday dirt that gold collects; however, it's wise to have it polished once a year so that it retains its luster.

White Gold

Many consumers simply love the look of their white gold jewelry. An additional reason people love white gold is that it matches the silver pieces in their collections. This allows them to wear more of their pieces together and not have a mix and match look to their jewelry ensembles. Although many people think white gold is a natural occurrence, it's not. Additives are placed in the melted metal before casting to cause yellow gold to turn a bright, white color. Unfortunately, over time, these additives tend to dull, and white gold will lose its brightness. It must be professionally polished once every year or two in order to retain its beauty. Most white gold pieces are coated with a layer of rhodium to give it an extra shine. Aside from the yearly regimen of polishing, it will be necessary to get a fresh coat of rhodium so that the value and beauty of this metal can be properly maintained.

Silver

Silver is the whitest metal, but it requires more cleaning and polishing than any of the other precious metals. It's a softer metal, and it it scratches easily. Silver naturally goes through an oxidation process that causes it to tarnish easier than platinum or gold.

4. Repair

When a repair is needed, it's important to take care of it as soon as possible. Wearing jewelry without making needed repairs can cause undue damage or loss. For instance, forcing a clasp to close when it is no longer fitting properly can result in the loss of a bracelet or necklace. Even if the piece is not lost, jewelry components can be bent in such a way that they can no longer be repaired. This may very well result in having to replace the damaged component, which can cost hundreds of dollars compared to just a few dollars in repair costs. Because the latter is the more frugal approach, it's advisable to repair all jewelry with broken or improperly functioning components.

5. Avoid Exposing Jewelry to Chemicals

No one can stress this point enough: Chemicals ruin the finish and color of jewelry. It's important to remove jewelry before doing any household cleaning to avoid exposure to even the mildest of chemicals. Many people forget that the metal in their jewelry can be altered by coming into contact with household cleaning products. Wear rubber gloves,, or remove jewelry before cleaning with household chemicals.

6. Store Silver Jewelry in Tarnish Resistant Bags

To prevent an accelerated oxidation on silver jewelry, store them in airtight, tarnish resistant bags.. This slows down the oxidation on silver pieces that are not worn on a regular basis. The more oxidized silver becomes, the harder it will be to clean. Additionally, it would be wise to take it out of the bag from time to time and rub it with a chemically treated silver polishing cloth to further slow or prevent oxidation from occurring.

JEWELLERY CARE TIPS

YOUR  RING IS MADE TO LAST A LIFETIME AND LONGER, BUT IT STILL NEEDS A LITTLE CARE AND ATTENTION TO KEEP IT LOOKING ITS BEST.

RINGS ARE GENERALLY WORN EVERY DAY, SO IT’S NATURAL THAT THEY’LL LOSE THAT FRESH-FROM-THE-JEWELLER SHINE, BUT NOT TO WORRY – IT’LL BE REPLACED BY A BEAUTIFUL PATINA THAT GIVES THE RING A LOOK OF LIVED-IN AUTHENTICITY. TO HELP KEEP YOUR RING IN GOOD CONDITION, SO IT CAN BE HANDED DOWN THROUGH FUTURE GENERATIONS, HERE’S SOME SIMPLE CARE ADVICE.

PRECIOUS METALS ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO DAMAGE FROM CHLORINE AND HARSH CHEMICALS, AND REPEATED EXPOSURE TO CHLORINE, ESPECIALLY AT HIGH TEMPERATURES, CAN PERMANENTLY DAMAGE OR DISCOLOUR THE METAL. THAT’S WHY WE ADVISE WEARERS TO TAKE OFF THEIR RINGS BEFORE USING CLEANING PRODUCTS OR SPENDING TIME IN A CHLORINATED POOL OR HOT TUB.

THE BIGGEST RISK TO YOUR RING IS LOSS. THE MOST LIKELY PLACE TO LOSE IT IS AT THE BEACH OR A WATER PARK, SIMPLY BECAUSE SIGNET RINGS ARE HEAVY. ADD COLD WATER AND SUNTAN LOTION TO THE EQUATION AND THEY CAN EASILY SLIP OFF.

FOR THAT REASON, IT’S A GOOD IDEA TO LEAVE YOUR RING AT HOME IF YOU’RE PLANNING A DAY WITH WATER ACTIVITIES.

GEMSTONES NEED A LITTLE MORE CARE. WHILE THEY’RE HARDER THAN PRECIOUS METAL, THEY’RE MUCH MORE BRITTLE, SO TRY TO PROTECT THEM FROM HARD BLOWS AND KNOCKS IN CASE THEY CHIP OR CRACK. IT’S BEST TO REMOVE YOUR GEMSTONE RING BEFORE ANY STRENUOUS ACTIVITY AND KEEP IT AWAY FROM DIRTY WATER, OILS, CHEMICALS, COSMETICS, HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS AND CHLORINE. TO CLEAN YOUR RING, GENTLY BRUSH IT WITH A SOFT TOOTHBRUSH AND MILD, SOAPY WARM WATER. AS WITH OUR STANDARD SIGNET RINGS, RINSE IT IN CLEAN WATER AND DRY IT WITH A SOFT CLOTH.

IF YOU’D PREFER TO HAVE YOUR RING CLEANED BY US, THAT’S NO PROBLEM. SIMPLY SEND IT OR BRING IT TO OUR WORKSHOP AND WE’LL CLEAN IT FOR YOU.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WHEN YOU DO REMOVE YOUR JEWELLERY FOR ANY REASON, BE SURE TO PUT IT IN A JEWELLERY BOX TO PROTECT IT FROM LOSS AND DAMAGE.
